Tigers 2012 MLB Season Odds
(The Spread) – After landing one of the biggest names on this year’s free agent market, the Detroit Tigers appear poised to make a World Series run in 2012.
According to oddsmakers the Tigers are 6/1 to win the 2012 World Series and 3/1 to win the American League Pennant this season. They’re also -450 to win the American League Central Division and have an over/under of 93 for number of total wins during the regular season.
The Tigers broke the bank to bring Cecil Fielder’s son Prince Fielder to Detroit. The club signed Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract and now have one of the best 3-4 punches in baseball thanks to Fielder and Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers also signed relievers Jose Valverde and Octavio Dotel, infielder Ramon Santiago and catcher Gerald Laird.

The club’s notable losses include Magglio Ordonez (who is likely to retire soon), Wilson Betemit, Carlos Guillen, Brady Penny and Joel Zumaya, who was once regarded as the most promising reliever in the organization. Injuries essentially derailed Zumaya’s career.
OUTLOOK: It’s hard not to like the Tigers’ chances to win the American League Central and challenge the Yankees, Angels, Rangers, Red Sox and Rays for AL dominance in 2012. Austin Jackson gives them a ton of speed at the leadoff position and the 3-4-5 combination of Cabrera, Fielder and Delmon Young is outstanding. In fact, everyone in their projected lineup could potentially hit double digit home runs this season, so offense won’t be a problem. Thanks to ace Justin Verlander, pitching shouldn’t be either. Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, Rick Procello and Andrew Oliver round out an underrated rotation. While some believe Fielder ultimately won’t be worth the money down the road, there’s no question that he’ll provide plenty of thrills this season.
