Astros 2012 Season Odds
(The Spread) – It’s looking like another long season ahead for the Houston Astros.
According to oddsmakers the Astros are 300/1 long shots to win the 2012 World Series and are 40/1 to win the National League Pennant. They’re also 100/1 to win the National League Central Division and have an over/under of 63 for number of total wins for the regular season.
This winter, the Astros added outfielders Travis Buck, Brad Snyder, Fernando Martinez, Jack Cust and Justin Ruggiano, as well as pitchers Rhiner Cruz, Kyle Weiland and Livan Hernandez. They also added shortstop Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox and signed free agent catcher Carlos Corporan.

Their “key” departures, if you can even call them that, were right-hander Mark Melancon, catcher Craig Tatum, and shortstop Clint Barmes. But none of those players will keep the opposition up at night.
OUTLOOK: The Astros’ odds say it all. This club is devoid of talent from top to bottom. The focus this offseason was a change in ownership – not improving the actual roster. Thus, Houston has yet another team that won’t be able to compete within the division, even though the Cardinals, Brewers and Reds all have flaws this year. Not one player in their starting lineup is projected to hit .300 and unless Carlos Lee has a power surge that nobody sees coming, not one hitter is likely to hit over 20 home runs either. The starting rotation has the ability to be underrated thanks to the top four of Wandy Rodriguez, Bud Norris, J.A. Happ and Livan Hernandez, but runs will be at a premium for Houston’s offense. This just isn’t a very good club.
