2012 Home Run Derby Odds
KANSAS CITY, MO (The Spread) – The odds are out for the 2012 Home Run Derby and Toronto’s biggest slugger has opened as the favorite.
Oddsmakers have installed the Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista as a 7/2 favorite to win this year’s Home Run Derby, while the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton is 4/1 and the Tigers’ Prince Fielder is 5/1. Both Robinson Cano of the Yankees and Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals are 11/2, respectively, while the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp and the Angels’ Mark Trumbo are 6/1, respectively. Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez is the long shot at 13/2.
Last year Cano won when he slugged 32 total home runs, including 12 in the Finals against Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez (who hit 11 in the Finals and 31 overall). Fielder finished with nine home runs, as did David Ortiz. The Cardinals’ Matt Holliday hit five home runs, Bautista only hit four and Kemp hit just two total dingers in the 2011 Home Run Derby.
The Yankees, Mariners, White Sox and Angels have had the most players win the Home Run Derby in the history of the event. The Yankees have also hit the second most home runs with 99, while Boston has hit the most with 132. The Reds, Phillies and Orioles each have two wins apiece, while a slew of teams have won. The Cardinals, Dodgers, Tigers, Blue Jays, Rockies and Marlins have never had a representative win the Home Run Derby so Bautista, Stanton, Fielder, Beltran, Kemp and Gonzalez have their work cut out for them as they battle the history of the event.
Fielder, however, did win the 2009 Home Run Derby when he slugged 23 total dingers to outlast the Rangers’ Nelson Cruz (who hit 21). Fielder also participated in the 2007 Home Run Derby, but he hit just three home runs and watched as the Angels’ Vladimir Guerrero won with 17 jacks.
