Padres 2012 MLB Season Odds
(The Spread) – After a series of bold but risk trades this offseason, new Padres GM Josh Byrnes is shaking things up in San Diego.
According to oddsmakers the Padres are 100/1 to win the 2012 World Series and 125/1 to win the National League Pennant this season. They’re also 15/1 to win the National League West Division and have an over/under of 74 for total number of wins in the regular season.
In one of Byrnes’ many trades this offseason, he sent starter Mat Latos to the Reds in exchange for first baseman Yonder Alonso, catcher Yasmani Grandal, reliever Brad Boxberger and starter Edinson Volquez. Byrnes also traded Anthony Rizzo and Zach Cates to the Cubs for Andrew Cashner and Kyung-Min Na, as well as Nick Schmidt to the Rockies for closer Huston Street.

Outfielder Cameron Maybin received a five-year, $25 million extension this winter and Nick Hundley got a three-year, $9 million extension. John Baker was also acquired from the Marlins in exchange for Wade LeBlanc, while Ryan Kelly was acquired from the Rangers for catcher Luis Martinez.
OUTLOOK: This isn’t a bad ball club. Maybin started to cash in on his immense talent last season and if he can continue to develop, he’ll be a nice player at the top of the Padres’ lineup for years to come. The starting pitching should be very good again as well, led by Tim Stauffer, the underrated Cory Luebke, Volquez and Clayton Richard. That said, the middle of the lineup lacks power, which is why the Padres could struggle against the likes of the Giants and Diamondbacks, whom both have solid starting pitching. Byrnes made some aggressive moves this winter to try and improve this club long-term. But for now, it doesn’t look like San Diego has enough firepower to win the National League West. Of course, that’s what everyone said in 2010 when they nearly won the division wire-to-wire before being caught by the Giants on the final day of the regular season.
