According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Scherzer is a 3/2 favorite to win this year’s Cy Young award heading into the second half of the regular season. Boston starter Clay Buchholz has the next-best odds to win at 9/2, while Seattle ace Felix Hernandez is 11/2. Injured Rangers starting pitcher Yu Darvish, meanwhile, is 15/2.
Continuing with the current odds, A’s veteran Bartolo Colon is currently 10/1 to win this year’s American League Cy Young award, while Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander is 12/1 to win. All-Star Matt Moore of the Rays, meanwhile, is 15/1 while the surprising Justin Masterson of the Cleveland Indians is 20/1 to win the 2013 AL Cy Young. The best reliever in baseball, Mariano Rivera, is also 20/1 to win this year’s Cy Young and teammate Hiroki Kuroda is 25/1, as are Hiwashi Iwakuma of the Mariners and Joe Nathan of the Rangers.
Scherzer and Moore currently lead all Major League pitchers with 13 wins apiece, while Colon has 12 wins among American League pitchers and Chris Tillman of Baltimore has 11. “King Felix,” meanwhile, has 10 wins, as does Masterson. Hernandez also has an American League-best 2.53 ERA among pitchers who have over 100 innings pitched.
Hernandez won the 2010 American League Cy Young and Justin Verlander won the 2011 Cy Young. Colon is currently the only other pitcher with odds to win this year’s Cy Young that has also won the award in a previous season. Colon was 21-8 with the 2005 Los Angeles Angels and claimed the Cy Young Award that season.
