Los Angeles (63-39) opened a 10-game road
trip by hanging on for a 6-5 victory over Baltimore on Friday night –
its eighth win in nine games overall.
The Angels, who entered
this trip after a 5-1 homestand, have won three in a row away from
home, where they are a major league-best 32-18 – better than their
31-21 mark at Angel Stadium.
On Friday, first baseman Casey
Kotchman homered and had two RBIs. Center fielder Torii Hunter, who
played his first game since being reinstated from the bereavement list
after the death of his grandmother, also drove in a pair of runs.
Hunter,
who hadn’t played since Monday, is batting .320 (8-for-25) during a
seven-game hitting streak. He’s 6-for-13 with six RBIs in four games
versus Baltimore this season.
The Angels led 5-0 on Friday, but
had to hold on after Baltimore (48-54) scored three runs in the seventh
and one in the ninth. Francisco Rodriguez, though, recorded his major
league-leading 43rd save.
"We had to hold them off with
everything we had,” said Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia, whose team
holds a 10 1/2-game lead in the AL West. No other club in the majors
leads its division by more than 3 1/2 games.
Angels starter Jon
Garland (8-6, 4.12 ERA) is 0-1 in two outings since earning his 100th
career win July 6 against Toronto on July 6. Now, though, he’ll look to
continue his recent dominance over Baltimore, which has lost four in a
row and five of six.
The right-hander has defeated the Orioles
five straight times, including a 3-1 win on May 3, when he gave up a
run and three hits in eight innings.
"Every team is a challenge,"
Garland told the Angels’ official Web site. "To me, it doesn’t matter
who it is. You have to go out there and make quality pitches and try to
get them to hit my pitch."
Garland allowed two earned runs and
six hits in 6 2-3 innings Sunday, but didn’t factor in the decision of
a 5-3 win over Boston.
Radhames Liz (4-2, 7.19) was on the mound
the last time Baltimore posted a victory. He tries for his second
consecutive win after allowing three runs and five hits, but walking
six in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-3 victory over Toronto on Monday.
"He’s
going to get burned at some point in time because these guys are too
good of hitters,” said Orioles manager Dave Trembley of Liz, who’s
struck out 32 batters and walked 26 this season. "They are going to
make you pay for those walks.”
The right-hander, making his
first career start versus Los Angeles, looks to end a trend in which
Baltimore starters have failed to go at least six innings in seven
straight games. The Orioles’ rotation has an 8.73 ERA in that span.
Kevin
Millar homered twice Friday as Baltimore fell to 3-6 on its season-high
11-game homestand. It was the seventh career multi-homer game for
Millar, who is 6-for-20 (.300) lifetime against Garland.
