Luke Weaver (2-1, 2.31 ERA) draws the start for St. Louis, while Milwaukee counters with Matt Garza (6-7, 4.67) Weaver has been good since joining the Cardinals rotation, posting a 1.07 WHIP with 26 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings. He most recently threw seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts in a 6-2 home win over the Padres. Garza has a 1.40 WHIP with 73 strikeouts in 106 innings. The Brewers have lost five of his last seven starts. He gave up one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in a 4-2 loss at the Giants his last time out.
St. Louis has a 65-65 record and is 28-34 on the road, while Milwaukee is 68-63 and 35-30 at home. The Brewers have won seven of the last 10 meetings, while the over-under is 5-4-1.
The Cardinals lost two of three over the weekend at home versus the Rays, including Sunday’s 10-inning 3-2 loss. Kolten Wong and Matt Carpenter paced the offense with a solo home run each. Sam Tuivailala suffered the loss in relief. The Brewers won two out of three at the Dodgers, wrapping up the series win with a 3-2 triumph Sunday. Hernan Perez paced the offense with a home run, while Domingo Santana was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Eric Sogard and Neil Walker each had a hit and scored a run. Jimmy Nelson gave up two earned runs and struck out six in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Corey Knebel earned his 29th save.
The Brewers are coming off a major high being the first team since early June to hand the Dodgers a series loss. But the problem here is they turn to the unreliable Garza in their first game back home following the West Coast swing. The Cardinals should be able to pounce on him for a few runs, while Weaver is pitching with a tremendous amount of confidence following his last start. St. Louis is favored for a reason.
