Pitching for Baltimore will be Jeremy Hellickson, while New York turns to Jordan Montgomery. Hellickson has a 1.25 WHIP with 89 stirkeouts in 155 innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks in six innings during a 3-2 loss at Cleveland. Hellickson has a 4.59 ERA in 14 road starts. Montgomery carries a 1.28 WHIP with 130 strikeouts over 138 innings of work. He gave up three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 3 1/3 innings during a 16-7 win at Texas his last start. Montgomery has a 4.08 ERA in 12 home starts.
The Orioles are 72-76 overall and 28-46 on the road, while the Yankees are 81-66 and 41-27 at home. New York has won seven of the last 10 meetings, while the total has gone over in all 10 games.
On Friday night, New York cruised to an 8-2 win for its second straight decisive win in as many days. Luis Severino gave up two earned runs and struck out seven over eight innings to post the win. Didi Gregorius was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer plus a walk for four RBIs. Chase Headley was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Gary Sanchez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Holliday was 2-for-4. Greg Bird ended the night 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two runs. Welington Castillo hit a two-run homer for Baltimore. Gabriel Ynoa allowed three runs (two earned) over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
These two teams love playing high-scoring games against each other as evidenced by all the totals going over. Hellickson can be a frustrating pitcher to get hard contact off, but he also is a flyball pitcher with a low strikeout rate. Montgomery did not fare well his last start, but it was also at a ballpark where hitters thrive. The wind is blowing in slightly for Saturday’s game and the sun could cause issues for part of the game due to it’s start time. We’re going to say this is the time for the Orioles and Yankees to finally play a game that goes under.
