Pitching for New York will be Sonny Gray (9-9, 3.22 ERA), while Tampa Bay counters with Blake Snell (3-6, 4.36). Gray gave up one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings in a 9-1 win at the Orioles his last start. He has a WHIP of 1.17 with 134 strikeouts in 139 1/3 innings. Gray has a 3.39 ERA in 10 road starts. Snell holds a 1.40 WHIP with 95 strikeouts over 109 1/3 innings. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over four innings in a 10-6 home loss to the Twins his last outing. He has a 4.50 ERA in eight home starts.
New York is 78-65 overall this season and 38-38 on the road, while Tampa Bay is 71-74 and 36-35 at home. The Yankees have won seven of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 4-5-1.
Monday’s game was won 5-1 by New York to extend its win streak to three games. David Robertson threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer to provide much of the offense. Tyler Austin added a double. Jake Odorizzi allowed five runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. Adeiny Hechavarria was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
Tampa Bay has some left-handed power hitters to counter Gray, but he’s actually been better against lefties this year. The Yankees appear primed to play good baseball over the next several weeks. We expect them to chalk up another win here.
