Yordan Alvarez went 2-for-4 and hit his 29th homer Sunday against the Royals. Alvarez, who had DH’d of late, returned to left field today and hit his sixth homer in his last 17 games. Alvarez is at 469 plate appearances with six games left to go, which means he’ll almost certainly fall short of the 502 he’ll need to qualify for the batting title. Still, even if he takes 10-15 zeroes, he’ll probably rank third in the AL in OPS, given that he’s at .995 right now.

As a team, the Mariners scratched out just six hits in the contest — with France the only member of their offense to tally more than one. Both of his hits were singles and the M’s were never able to cash him — or anyone else — in during the game. With his two-hit night, the 29-year-old first baseman is slashing .249/.336/.358 with 10 homers and 56 RBI in 634 plate appearances. With the loss, the Mariners now sit a half game out of the Wild Card race — looking up at the Astros.
