Red Sox win first two
Boston has won the first two games of this series after a 5-4 victory on Saturday. The Sox have won seven of their last nine overall. The Red Sox are 70-61 overall, 36-27 on the road and 75-52 with the over. Boston has Brian Johnson on the mound today. He is 1-2 on the season with a 6.58 ERA.
The Sox broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth with a solo home run from Brock Holt. Holt scored twice in the victory. Christian Vazquez had two hits and two RBI to lead Boston at the plate. Nathan Eovaldi got the start on Saturday, but lasted just three innings and gave up two runs. Matt Barnes got the win in relief to improve to 4-4 on the year while Brandon Workman recorded his eighth save.
Padres on a slide
San Diego is riding a four-game losing streak after the loss on Saturday. The Padres have scored just eight runs total over their last four. San Diego is now 59-69 on the season, 29-35 at home and 60-59 with the over. The Padres have Joey Lucchesi on the mound this afternoon. He is 8-7 on the year with a 4.20 ERA.
Dinelson Lamet got the start for San Diego on Saturday and gave up four runs over five innings but didn’t take a decision. Kirby Yates gave up the solo home run in the ninth to take the loss and fall to 0-4 on the year. At the plate, Eric Hosmer had his 19th home run of the season and drove in two runs to lead the Padres.
MLB Betting Trends
Boston
The Red Sox are 21-5 in their last 26 interleague road games and 8-3 in their last 11 interleague games against a left-handed starter.
San Diego
The Padres are 1-5 in their last six interleague games and 2-5 in their last seven games following a loss.
Prediction:
Johnson has limited starts this year and his numbers are too impressive. He has really struggled on the road and has a 7.98 ERA this year. Lucchesi has been steady. Not lights out, but not awful. He gives up a few runs per start, but keeps the team in the game. He carries a 2.91 ERA and a 6-3 record at home this season. Boston has been playing well, but I don’t like the pitching matchup today. The Padres aren’t great at the plate, but I think they can jump on Johnson and the Boston bullpen.
MLB Prediction: San Diego Padres -125
