Drawing the start for the Angels is J.C. Ramirez (10-10, 4.26 ERA), while the Orioles will go with Kevin Gausman (9-8, 5.08). Ramirez has had an inconsistent season since entering the Angels rotation, occasionally flashing brilliance while more often showing mediocrity. He threw eight shutout innings in his first start of August in a 7-0 win over the Phillies, but since has allowed nine earned runs over 12 innings his last two starts. Ramirez has been better on the road, going 7-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 66 2/3 innings. He has a 1.36 WHIP. Gausman has had three subpar starts since June 27, but the other seven have been fantastic as he’s lowered his ERA from 6.60 in mid-June to where it is now. He’s coming off an 11-3 win at Seattle where he gave up two earned runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Gausman has struck out 132 in 140 innings, has a 1.60 WHIP and carries a 4.70 ERA at home.
Los Angeles is 62-60 this season and 29-34 on the road, while Baltimore is 60-62 and 36-23 at home.
The Orioles rallied to win the series opener 9-7 as Manny Machado hit three home runs including a walk-off grand slam. He drove in seven runs. Mark Trumbo and Caleb Joseph also homered. Tim Beckham added two hits and two runs, while Adam Jones also had two hits. Darren O’Day threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Albert Pujols, C.J. Cron, Kaleb Cowart and Mike Trout all homered for the Angels. Keynan Middleton took the loss in relief.
