Chad Kuhl (6-9, 4.52 ERA) gets the start for Pittsburgh and he will oppose the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta (13-8, 3.49). Kuhl has a 1.45 WHIP with 110 strikeouts in 129 1/3 innings. He has a 4.86 ERA in 14 road starts. Kuhl allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and five walks over four innings in his last start, a 5-2 home defeat versus the Dodgers. Arrieta holds a 1.20 WHIP with 149 strikeouts in 152 innings. He has a 3.23 home ERA in nine starts. Arrieta has been spectacular in August, carrying a 1.44 ERA in five starts, striking out 33 batters over 31 1/3 innings.
Pittsburgh has a has 63-69 record and is 28-38 on the road, while Chicago comes in at 70-60 and 35-28 at home. The Cubs won the series opener 6-1 and have prevailed in six of the last 10 meetings. The total has gone under in six of those games.
On Monday, Mike Montgomery threw seven innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts to earn the win. Anthony Rizzo had a double, a run and an RBI to help lead the offense. Ian Happ was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Albert Almora and Alex Avila also had a hit and drove in a run. Jason Heyward added two hits. Trevor Williams took the loss for the Pirates as he allowed two earned runs over five innings. Jordy Mercer was 3-for-3 with a home run, while David Freese added two hits.
