Tonight’s pitching matchup features David Holmberg (0-0, 2.50 ERA) on the mound for the Sox to face Josh Tomlin (3-7, 5.54) of the Indians. Holmberg has just two starts, both of which were short. He combined for 7.2 innings, allowing four runs with five walks and just three strikeouts. For the season, he has given up five runs over 18 innings of work. His WHIP is just 0.83. Tomlin hasn’t had great numbers this year, but his last two starts have been somewhat promising. He has went a combined 16.1 innings, allowing four runs with eight strikeouts and no walks. On the season, Tomlin has allowed 39 earned runs with 44 strikeouts and just four walks. His WHIP is just 1.26.
Cleveland won the first game of the series on Friday, 7-3. The two hit the over of 9 runs. They have pushed or hit the under in five of seven meetings this season. Cleveland is now 30-28 overall, 13-14 at home and 33-22 with the under. Chicago is 25-34 overall, 13-23 on the road and 29-27 with the over.
The Indians put up seven runs on 10 hits in Friday’s win. Edwin Encarnacion hit his 11th home run of the season and finished with three hits to lead Cleveland. Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall also had a pair of hits in the win. The hits allowed Corey Kluber to earn his fifth win of the year. He lasted 6 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Miguel Gonzalez took his seventh loss of the year for Chicago, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings.
The total is set very high for a pair of teams accustomed to hitting the under. Tomlin has shown he is capable of great outings this year despite poor overall numbers. Holmberg has a solid WHIP despite limited starting experience. Cleveland has hit the under in 9 of Tomlin’s last 12 starts against a division opponent. I think the under definitely hits tonight. Tomlin will continue to build off good starts and Chicago will pull Holmberg quick if things get shaky.
