Today’s pitching matchup features Corey Kluber (17-4, 2.35 ERA) on the mound for the Indians to face Mike Leake (3-0, 2.13) of the Mariners. Kluber has pitched back-to-back scoreless outings, lasting 16 innings between the two starts with 17 strikeouts and no walks. Kluber has 252 strikeouts and 34 walks on the season with a 0.85 WHIP. Leake has been pretty solid with the Mariners, allowing six earned runs over four starts, a total of 25.1 innings. Leake has 125 strikeouts on the season with 37 walks and a 1.29 WHIP.
The Mariners put an end to Cleveland’s latest win streak with a 3-1 win on Friday night to open this series, but Cleveland bounced back in a big way on Saturday with an 11-4 win. Seattle is now 75-80 overall and 40-40 at home. Cleveland is now 97-58 overall and 52-28 on the road.
The Indians got a great start from Carlos Carrasco, who allowed one run over 5.2 innings to earn his 17th win of the season on Saturday. Andrew Moore gave up two runs over four innings to take his fifth loss for the Mariners. Jose Ramirez and Yan Gomes each had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Cleveland while Austin Jackson also had three hits. Nelson Cruz homered for his second straight game to lead the Mariners. He has 37 home runs on the season.
Leake has been good for the Mariners, but he may have to be perfect to win on Sunday. Kluber is locked in right now. While you can’t expect another shutout performance, Kluber is likely to only give up a few runs at his worst. With his ability to go deep into games and a great bullpen behind him, it’s easy to see why he’s won nine of his last 10 starts. Cleveland’s hitting should eventually get to Leake, or get to the Seattle bullpen.
