The pitching matchup for tonight has Jordan Zimmerman (5-5, 5.35 ERA) on the mound for the Tigers to face Ariel Miranda (6-3, 4.17) of the Mariners. Zimmerman has shown improved starts over the last couple weeks. He has allowed just five earned runs over his last 20 innings of work. On the season he has 48 strikeouts with 22 walks and a 1.47 WHIP. Miranda is coming off a poor outing against the Twins, allowing six runs and 10 hits in four innings. He has 65 strikeouts with 30 walks this season and a 1.25 WHIP.
Seattle picked up a 6-2 win over the Tigers on Monday night to open this series. The Mariners have won three straight meetings with the Tigers and Detroit has lost three straight. The Tigers are now 32-37 overall and 14-21 on the road while the Mariners are 35-37 overall and 21-13 at home.
Detroit held a 2-0 lead in Monday’s game, but Seattle got to the Tigers’ struggling bullpen once again. Anibal Sanchez gave Detroit a respectable start, allowing two runs over five innings. The pen then gave up four runs over three innings of work. Mike Zunino hit a pair of home runs late in the game to finish with four RBI while Guillermo Heredia also had a home run for Seattle.
Zimmerman has looked good as of late, but the Tigers have not. Their bats go silent for extended periods of time and their bullpen gives up runs regularly. Even if Zimmerman is to have a good start, his bullpen could easily mess it up. Miranda isn’t a dominant pitcher, but he could shut down this struggling Detroit lineup tonight. Take your chances on Seattle at home.
