The pitching matchup for tonight’s game has Chris Smith on the mound for Oakland to face Andrew Moore (1-1, 3.60 ERA) of the Mariners. Smith is making his first start of the 2017 season. He pitched in 13 games last year, posting a 2.92 ERA over 24.2 innings of work. Moore has started two games this season, going a total of 15 innings while allowing six earned runs. He has eight strikeouts and no walks.
These two have split the first two games of this series. Oakland picked up a 7-4 win on Thursday while Seattle had a 7-2 win on Friday. The Mariners are 42-46 overall and 26-21 at home. Oakland is 38-49 overall and 14-28 on the road.
Saturday saw the Mariners lead most of the game and then tack on some insurance runs late. James Paxton gave Seattle the start they needed to end their losing streak. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts. Sean Manaea didn’t pitch too bad, allowing three runs in seven innings, but his bullpen allowed four runs over just one inning of work. Nelson Cruz had his 16th home run of the season and he drove in five runs to get to 68 on the season. Oakland was led by Marcus Semien, who had two RBI.
Oakland isn’t sure what it will get from Smith tonight in his 2017 debut. Moore has limited starts, but he has been able to get deep into games in his two outings. Moore has yet to walk a batter either. Those limited baserunners will be key today. Seattle should be able to get some runs on Smith while Moore limits Oakland’s scoring chances.
