Today’s pitching matchup has Chris Tillman (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound for the Orioles to face Nate Karns (2-2, 4.58) of the Royals. Tillman made his first start of the season last week against the White Sox. He went five innings, allowing three hits and three walks with no runs and four strikeouts. Karns has been steadier than his ERA may show. He isn’t going deep into games, but has largely been reliable. He has 36 strikeouts in 35.1 innings with a WHIP of 1.22.
Kansas City took the first game in the series on Friday with a 3-2 win. The home team has won five straight meetings between these two. Kansas City is now 14-21 overall and 9-9 at home. Baltimore is 22-12 overall and 9-9 on the road.
An Eric Hosmer double in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Lorenzo Cain and lifted the Royals to the win. Danny Duffy pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out six. Dylan Bundy pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and two runs with eight strikeouts in the loss for the Orioles. Hosmer and Cain both had two hits in the win while Caleb Joseph was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Orioles.
On paper, I just don’t see how the Royals can consistently beat the Orioles. Baltimore is better in almost every category. Today they have the better pitcher and the better lineup. Tillman hasn’t thrown much, but he will keep the Royals to limited runs before handing the ball to the bullpen. Karns has had some good outings, but I think he will struggle against this powerful Baltimore lineup.
