Host Indians poised to close out Cubs
Josh Tomlin did a magnificent job of muzzling the Cubs last week. Starting on short rest for just the second time in his career, though, will the righty be able to personally deliver Cleveland a title?
The two teams collide in Game 6 of the World Series this evening, with an 8:08 p.m. ET first pitch at Progressive Field. Online sports book Bovada.lv gives Chicago odds of -144 to extend its year. Conversely, the Indians represent +134 underdogs. The over/under run figure holds steady at seven.
Joe Maddon’s club staved off elimination Sunday with a 3-2 victory, but the Tribe cannot wait to get back to business in northeast Ohio. Cleveland compiled a 53-28 home record during the regular campaign. Things have gone swimmingly throughout the playoffs, too, including Tomlin’s most recent turn in front of the adoring fans. The Texas native blanked the Cubbies for 4 1/3 innings four nights ago, allowing only two singles.
Of course, Tomlin wasn’t forced to confront Kyle Schwarber then. That’ll change in several hours. With the action shifting to an American League Park, Chicago’s capable of DHing the physically limited slugger. Maddon also boasts the luxury of sending Jake Arrieta to the mound. The reigning Cy Young winner owns a 3-2 mark with a 3.72 ERA in six postseason assignments.

Stud relievers Andrew Miller and Cody Allen are bound to enter the fray sooner rather than later. Still, it’s imperative for Indians skipper Terry Francona to receive at least a handful of quality frames from Tomlin. Schwarber’s return to the main stage, coupled with Kris Bryant’s increased production, makes that a very difficult sell. In other words, we’re going the distance here.
