Dodgers’ Urias awaits next test against Rockies
Nobody expected Julio Urias to conquer the majors at the tender age of 19. The fact of the matter, though, is that the lefty’s first two appearances have been agonizing to watch.
Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts hopes that just a little home cooking changes everything. Urias makes his Dodger Stadium debut tonight, with a 10:10 p.m. ET first pitch vs. Colorado. At least Urias (0-1, 9.39 ERA) ventured deeper into the proceedings in his most recent outing. Following a 2 2/3-inning effort against the Mets on May 27, the heralded prospect worked five frames in last week’s 7-2 defeat to the Cubs. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits, still struggling to resemble the guy who went 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA in the Pacific Coast League.
If it’s any consolation, Urias runs headfirst into another laboring hurler in several hours. The Rockies’ Eddie Butler (2-3, 5.65) comes off an assignment in which he surrendered eight runs on 11 base knocks. In the first two innings of his six starts, opponents are batting .292 off the Radford product.

Colorado did dominate Los Angeles in the series opener, prevailing 6-1. Tyler Chatwood had the honors in that affair, however, and the rising star delivered a one-hitter. Now it’s Urias’ opportunity to show his true colors in a more favorable setting.
