Hot-hitting Padres host Rockies late tonight
San Diego manager Andy Green has endured a bevy of rough home results this year. Last night’s meeting with the Mariners, however, was more excruciating than usual.
Despite racking up 20 hits, the Padres suffered a 16-13 defeat to the American League West co-leaders. The setback represented the club’s ninth in 11 games. Additionally, Green’s group dipped to 11-16 at Petco Park.
Nonetheless, oddsmakers anticipate a rebound as the Rockies roll into town. Online sports book BetDSI lists San Diego as a 1.5-run favorite in this evening’s series opener. Colorado, on the other hand, enters as a +130 underdog. The over/under figure holds steady at 7.5 runs.
The Padres (21-34) couldn’t have a better hurler in place to rectify Thursday’s wrongs. Drew Pomeranz (4-5, 2.48 ERA), a fifth starter no longer, seems on the cusp of stardom. The former first-round selection paces the staff in victories and strikeouts (60). In his most recent outing, the Diamondbacks reached Pomeranz for five runs in the second inning. Prior to that misfire, though, he had posted a 1.70 ERA through nine appearances.
Chris Rusin (1-3, 4.75) can’t submit the same kind of résumé. Walt Weiss’ lefty has yielded 40 base knocks and 19 runs in 21 1/3 frames across his past four turns. He must pay special attention to third baseman Yangervis Solarte, who’s on a 13-for-31 tear since May 25.

We like the fact that Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez are catching fire for the Rockies (24-29). Yet, San Diego’s own surge on the offensive side bears monitoring. Take the host crew to recover in a key spot.
