Cox, Torre, Piniella honored
NEW YORK, NY (AP) – Joe Torre, Bobby Cox and Lou Piniella have been honored by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for their long careers.
The three retiring managers were presented the Willie, Mickey and the Duke Award from the BBWAA by Yankees manager Joe Girardi, capping Saturday night’s annual dinner.
Torre and Piniella thanked late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Cox singled out former Braves pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Cox said he was thanking the trio “for allowing me to keep working.”
The trio combined for 81 big league seasons as a manager. Cox is fourth in career wins, Torre fifth and Piniella 14th.
