Cubs manager David Ross told reporters on Thursday he was optimistic Seiya Suzuki won’t have to be placed on the injured list with his left finger sprain. Suzuki suffered the injury in the third inning of Thursday’s blowout loss to the Reds. The 27-year-old outfielder should get a day or two off as he recovers, but it appears he’s avoided a serious injury and could be back in the lineup over the weekend — assuming there are no setbacks, of course.

Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-5 with five RBI on Thursday in the White Sox’ lopsided defeat at the hands of the Red Sox. Vaughn did all of his damage in the early stages of the contest, walloping a three-run double against Red Sox’ starter Michael Wacha in the third inning before also taking him deep for a two-run shot in the fifth inning. The 24-year-old outfielder has been excellent this season, hitting .292/.349/.500 with 11 runs scored, five homers and 19 RBI across 106 plate appearances.
