Tigers win without having single baserunner
Detroit won as massive underdogs last night as it hit two solo home runs for its only hits including the go-ahead long ball in the top of the ninth inning of a 2-1 victory at Houston. John Hicks hit the tie-breaking homer in the ninth as he ended the contest 1-for-3. Ronny Rodriguez was also 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Dawel Lugo and Gordon Beckham finished 0-for-3, but were the only two players in the Tigers lineup to not strike out. Buck Farmer picked up the win in relief as he gave up one walk in a scoreless inning of work. Joe Jimenez notched the save as he gave up one hit with two strikeouts in one scoreless frame. Jordan Zimmermann will start tonight for Detroit as he enters with a 1-8 record, 6.66 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 57 strikeouts over 77 innings pitched.
Verlander falls against former team
Justin Verlander threw a complete-game gem, but was the tough-luck losing pitcher Wednesday night in a 2-1 home loss to Detroit. Verlander allowed two earned runs on two hits, both solo home run, while striking out 11 and walking none over the nine innings of work. Robinson Chirinos paced the Astros offense as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with a solo home run and two doubles, but was thrown out at third base for the game’s final out as he tried to stretch a double into a triple which would have given him the cycle. George Springer finished 2-for-4 to also contribute. Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman were both 0-for-3 plus a walk. Gerrit Cole gets the start tonight as he comes in with a 14-5 record, 2.87 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 226 strikeouts over 156 2/3 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
Detroit
The Tigers are 13-47 in their last 60 road games. Detroit is 2-5 in the last seven Zimmermann road starts.
Houston
The Astros are 22-4 in the last 26 Cole home starts. Houston is 45-16 in its last 61 home games.
Prediction:
I certainly did not see last night coming as most bettors didn’t, but I’m not taking that risk here. Cole has a humungous strikeout rate and is in good form, while Detroit is turning to the putrid Zimmermann and used its best relievers last night. This has the makings of a rout and I’m going with the runline bet on the hosts.
