Tigers manage one upset
The Detroit Tigers have lost five of their last six games, but they did manage the biggest betting upset in MLB history on Wednesday, winning a 2-1 game at Houston as a +430 underdog. Detroit is 38-87 on the season, 21-44 on the road and 61-54 with the under. The Tigers have Drew VerHagen getting the start today. He is 3-2 on the year with a 6.67 ERA.
The Tigers are a disaster at the plate and on the mound. They rank last in runs scored per game at 3.59 per contest and are last in batting average at .235. On the mound, Detroit has a 5.10 ERA with a 1.43 team WHIP. Miguel Cabrera is leading the team with 18 doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBI. Niko Goodrum has added 27 doubles, 12 home runs and 45 RBI.
Twins struggle with Sox
Minnesota is coming off a series loss at home to the White Sox this week, but the Twins have still won five of their last seven overall. Minnesota is 77-50 on the season, 37-28 at home and 64-55 with the over. The Twins have Jose Berrios on the mound today. He is 10-6 on the year with a 3.37 ERA.
The Twins rank among the best in the league in pitching and hitting this year. Offensively, Minnesota is producing 5.83 runs per game while batting .271 as a team. On the mound, the Twins have a 4.15 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP. Eddie Rosario has 19 doubles, 27 home runs and 85 RBI to lead the team this year, but he is questionable to play tonight due to a hamstring injury. Max Kepler is adding 28 doubles, 34 home runs and 84 RBI for Minnesota.
MLB Betting Trends
Detroit
The Tigers are 17-35 in their last 52 division games and 7-23 in their last 30 series openers.
Minnesota
The Twins are 8-2 in their last 10 series openers and 12-3 in their last 15 Friday games.
Prediction:
Berrios is coming off some shaky starts as of late, allowing 19 runs over his last 16 innings of work. He does hold a 2.70 ERA against the Tigers this year and he has been stronger at home than on the road this season. VerHagen is coming off some solid starts, but he doesn’t get much run support. I think that will be the issue today as well. Detroit just isn’t a productive lineup and they are facing a good veteran in Berrios. Minnesota can eventually beat up on the Detroit bullpen if VerHagen pitches well.
MLB Prediction: Minnesota Twins -215
