Arizona Diamondbacks DFS SPIN
Caleb Smith limited the Brewers to one run over six innings but took a no-decision Wednesday in the Diamondbacks’ loss. Smith gave up only four hits on the day, but unfortunately one of them was to pitcher Brandon Woodruff in the top of the fifth inning after Jace Peterson had led off the frame with a double. That was the only run the Brewers could muster off of the left-hander, though, as Smith was able to pitch around four walks — one intentional — and a hit by pitch. Since moving into the rotation, Smith boasts a 2.73 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, he’s also walked 14, and walks and home runs figure to continue to be a problem. Smith’s next start will be in St. Louis.
St. Louis Cardinals DFS Spin
Carlos Martínez issued a season-high seven walks over five innings on Thursday in a loss to the Pirates. Martínez was tagged for five runs on five hits, including a three-run homer from Bryan Reynolds in the fourth inning, which accounted for most of the damage. He generated only five swinging strikes and finished with an unbelievably-poor 21 percent CSW (called strikes plus whiffs). The 29-year-old righty has really struggled over the last few weeks, allowing 30 runs with a 19/17 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 frames across his last five starts since June 2. He’ll carry a bloated 6.78 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 49/33 K/BB ratio across 73 innings (14 starts) into a favorable home matchup against the floundering Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.
