D-Backs’ sign Greinke, WS odds improve
Following the Red Sox’ signing of David Price, the Diamondbacks made the next-biggest splash on the free agent market by nabbing former Dodger Zack Greinke.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the agreement between Arizona and Greinke is for six years and $206 million. That puts Greinke at an average annual value of $34.33 million, which is higher than any pitcher in the history of baseball. It also topped the $31 million that Price received per year from Boston.
While the signing itself was shocking given that the Dodgers and Giants were the teams most connected to Greinke, it’s not surprising to see that the Diamondbacks’ World Series odds have improved over the past 24 hours. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag, the Diamondbacks have gone from 40/1 to 25/1 to win next year’s World Series.
Arizona might not be done either. Rosenthal also reports that the D-Backs remain interested in Mike Leake, even after signing Greinke to his record contract on Friday. Leake was reportedly meeting with the club on Thursday to discuss a potential deal.
