Indians’ World Series odds climb
The Indians’ 2017 World Series odds have improved significantly after signing Edwin Encarnacion.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Indians are now 8/1 to win the 2017 World Series. Those odds put them behind only the Cubs (15/4) and Red Sox (11/2), and are an improvement over the 15/1 odds that oddsmakers gave the Indians when the 2017 World Series futures were first released. Before signing Encarnacion, Cleveland was 10/1 to win next year’s Fall Classic.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports was the first to report that the Indians landed Encarnacion on a three-year deal last week. The contract is worth $60 million guaranteed according to FOX Sports’ Ken Roenthal and the club has an option for 2020 worth $25 million. The buyout on that option is $5 million so the deal could max out at $80 million over the course of the three years.

Encarnacion will essentially fill the spot that free agent Mike Napoli had in 2016. It’s a great signing for an Indians team that advanced all the way to Game 7 of the 2016 World Series before finally succumbing to the champion Cubs. Cleveland already boasts an excellent pitching staff and now that Encarnacion can be penciled into the middle of the Indians’ lineup, the Tribe now backs a big punch offensively.

What’s interesting is that Encarnacion’s agent, Paul Kinzer, told MLB Network Radio last Friday that his client turned down a “(Yoenis) Cespedes-type” offer from the A’s. Cespedes signed a three-year, $75 million contract to return to the Mets, but it’s not like Encarnacion turned down a much better deal from Oakland. After all, he still landed $65 million guaranteed from the Indians.
