Will Mets salvage series vs. Marlins?
The Mets’ 2-5 start hasn’t exactly lived up to the mammoth expectations created by last year’s run to the Fall Classic. Now, one of their biggest weapons on the bump is officially sidelined.
Manager Terry Collins will nonetheless try to rally his team in time for this afternoon’s affair with Miami. According to oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv, New York remains a 1.5-run favorite to prevail at Citi Field.
Righty flamethrower Jacob deGrom has been placed on the disabled list because of right lat stiffness, meaning Logan Verrett snares today’s assignment. The veteran logged four starts in 2015, including a no-decision vs. the Marlins on Sept. 14.
While a strong showing from Verrett represents a necessity, the Mets can’t possibly continue down the same offensive path. The club’s collective average: .187 with 18 runs scored. David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes, Lucas Duda, Neil Walker and Curtis Granderson all have whiffed eight times.
It’s no surprise, then, that Miami (3-3) stands on the precipice of sweeping a three-game series in Flushing for the first time since 2009. Dee Gordon scored last night’s winning run, and the second baseman will attempt to continue his masterful work in the Big Apple with Adam Conley on the hill at 1:10 p.m. ET. Conley’s 2016 debut only consisted of one inning due to inclement weather. He permitted three hits in seven frames against New York on Sept. 16.

Despite the extremely early stage of the season, the host squad doesn’t take kindly to losing ground in the uber-competitive NL East. Conley’s relatively pedestrian could be just the tonic for a struggling lineup. Bank on a matinee rebound from those 3-5 hitters.
