Wainwright takes assignment vs. Brewers
The Cardinals’ longest home losing streak in 33 years has come to a merciful end. Can the club make it two in a row over the Brewers this afternoon?
According to handicappers, that’s a strong possibility. Online sports book BetDSI likes St. Louis as a 1.5-run favorite entering today’s showdown at Busch Stadium. Milwaukee, on the other hand, represents a +155 underdog. The over/under run figure rests at eight.
Mike Matheny’s crew walloped Craig Counsell’s side last night, 7-1, halting a seven-game slide in the Gateway City. Left fielder Matt Holliday drove in three of those runs, giving him 50 for the season. Matt Carpenter, Aledmys Diaz and Yadier Molina all added two hits apiece.
Adam Wainwright would obviously welcome the same kind of offensive prowess in several hours. He’s coming off a rough showing at Kansas City that sullied an otherwise spectacular June. In 32 career appearances vs. the Brew Crew, the righty holds a 12-8 mark with a 2.32 ERA.

Conversely, Jimmy Nelson’s track record against the Cards reads like something out of a horror novel. The Alabama product is 0-5 with a 9.51 ERA in six meetings with the Redbirds. After a sublime start to the 2016 campaign, he’s also winless since May 29.
With cleanup threat Stephen Piscotty expected to return to the St. Louis lineup, the host club would appear to possess the undeniable edge on paper. We’re interested to see if the potential for severe storms wreaks havoc in the Midwest, though, and how Wainwright rebounds from more adversity. Bank on a relatively low-scoring battle.
