Wacha, Cardinals covet sweep vs. Brewers
Clean games have been hard to come by for the Cardinals this season. Yesterday’s contest against the Brewers, however, unfolded like a clinic of the highest order.
St. Louis prevailed, 3-0, thanks largely to seven superb innings from ace Adam Wainwright and a defensive effort that probably moved manager Mike Matheny to tears of joy. The home squad turned four double plays after floundering in the field for the better part of 2016.
The Busch Stadium faithful would love to watch an encore performance this afternoon, with a 2:15 p.m. ET first pitch in the Gateway City. Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv like the Cards to sweep Craig Counsell’s group. Milwaukee, on the other hand, is a +165 underdog.
Michael Wacha aims to pick up where Wainwright left off about 16 hours ago. If the Texas A&M product’s recent results on the hill are any indication, that stands a good chance of happening. Wacha overcame a couple of rough innings to defeat Kansas City earlier in the week and has now twirled four quality starts in a row. He’s 3-0 with a 4.22 in five career meetings with the Brew Crew.
Counsell, meanwhile, turns to Chase Anderson. Following a torrid two-month stretch to begin the season, the Texas native’s performance continues to spiral out of control. Anderson is 0-2 with a 12.71 ERA since June 9. On the flip side, he’s experienced a fair amount of success vs. the Redbirds.

That will provide little consolation today. The Cardinals simply own their NL Central rivals and desperately want to enter an upcoming set with Pittsburgh on a high note. Before the inevitable thunderstorms roll into the Lou, bank on the hosts to take care of business.
