Cubs shoot for another W vs. host Astros
John Lackey missed a decent chunk of August with a right shoulder strain. Judging by his first start back from the disabled list, everything seems to be in fine working order.
The Cubs’ veteran righty shoots for his second straight solid showing in today’s clash vs. Houston, with a 1:05 p.m. ET first pitch at Minute Maid Park. Online sports book BetDSI gives the visitors odds of -116 to triumph, whereas A.J. Hinch’s crew represents a +106 underdog. The over/under run total sits at 8.5.
Almost a week after silencing San Francisco, Lackey’s now tasked with taking care of a slumping Astros squad. The two-time World Series champion holds a 2-1 record with a 4.37 ERA in four career meetings with the franchise. He hasn’t faced Houston since 2014, though, back when he toed the rubber as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
As for the host club, it desperately needs a quality turn from Collin McHugh. The Stros have claimed each of the 29-year-old’s past four starts. He’s 5-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 11 previous interleague contests.

Surprisingly, Chicago’s offense seemed pretty stagnant in the series opener. While we wouldn’t expect the same results – or lack thereof – this afternoon, Houston’s in a must-win situation. Bank on Hinch’s club to keep matters close until the late stages.
