Santiago picked up his first win of 2017 when he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in last Wednesday’s 9-1 victory over the Royals. He needed 88 pitches to get through five innings so it wasn’t the most efficient start for Santiago, but he did a great job inducing weak contact when he did get into jams.
Boyd had a rough season debut, allowing five runs on five hits and walking four while striking out just two over 2 1/3 innings of work. The White Sox went on to beat the Tigers 11-2 in that Thursday meeting as rust may have played a factor in Boyd’s performance. Anibal Sanchez, who battled Boyd in spring training, was just as ineffective in relief.
Bet Today’s Twins vs. Tigers Game
OUR PICK: The Twins are 5-1 in Santiago’s last six starts against divisional opponents and are 5-2 in his last seven starts overall. The Tigers, meanwhile, have dropped four of Boyd’s last five starts and are just 1-4 in his last five outings against American League Central foes. Minnesota is off to a hot start and this pitching matchup doesn’t necessarily favor Detroit, so grab the plus points with the Twins, who are a nice value early on Tuesday.
