Detroit has Daniel Norris (2-2, 4.55 ERA) on the mound to face Ricky Nolasco (2-2, 4.31) of the Angels. Nolasco hasn’t been tremendous, but not awful. His WHIP this season is just 1.26. He has 37 strikeouts with only seven walks in 39.2 innings of work. Norris has allowed at least four earned runs in under five innings in three of his last four starts. He has 27 strikeouts with 17 walks in 31.2 innings of work. His WHIP is 1.77.
After the Tigers picked up a 7-1 win on Thursday night, the Angels bounced back with a 7-0 win on Friday night. Los Angeles is now 18-20 overall and 11-7 at home. Detroit enters tonight’s game 17-17 overall and 8-10 on the road.
The Angels had a near flawless game, as they held the Tigers to just four hits while racking up 14 of their own. Matt Shoemaker pitched six innings, allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts. The L.A. bullpen then pitched three scoreless innings. Jordan Zimmerman had another poor outing for the Tigers, allowing 10 hits and five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Anibal Sanchez pitched again, allowing two runs in one inning of work. His season ERA is now 10.13. Luis Valbuena and Cliff Pennington led L.A. at the plate, as each had three hits. Pennington and Mike Trout both drove in two runs.
The Tigers seem somewhat incapable of winning without Justin Verlander or Michael Fulmer on the mound. Neither is pitching today and that should lead to trouble. Norris won’t get very deep into today’s game and handing the ball to the bullpen is not a successful option for the Tigers. Nolasco has a high ERA, but his WHIP is low. That should allow him to keep the Detroit hitters at bay somewhat and lead his team to a win.
