The pitching matchup for today’s game has Marcus Stroman (7-3, 3.15 ERA) on the mound for the Jays to face Martin Perez (3-6, 4.72) of the Rangers. Perez has been pretty shaky all season. He has allowed multiple runs in his last 10 starts and has 58 strikeouts with 30 walks and a 1.64 WHIP for the season. Stroman has managed to get deep into games over his last two starts. He has gone 88.2 innings in 14 starts, allowing 31 earned runs with 21 walks and 71 strikeouts. His WHIP is 1.25.
Toronto has won two of three games with Texas this week so far. The Jays won 7-6 on Monday and 7-5 on Wednesday while Texas had a 6-1 win on Tuesday night. Both teams are now 35-36 overall. Toronto is 16-19 on the road while Texas is 21-17 at home.
Toronto jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and held off Texas from there. The Jays rocked Texas starter Tyson Ross, who gave up all seven runs in three innings of work. The run support helped Joe Biagini, who got his second win despite not pitching that well himself. He allowed four runs over 5.2 innings. Ryan Goins drove in three runs to lead Toronto while Darwin Barney drove in two. Texas was led by Shin-Soo Choo, who drove in two runs while Joey Gallo had three hits and scored three runs.
Toronto has had the edge in this series overall, winning seven of the last nine meetings with Texas. The Jays have also done well with Stroman on the mound, winning seven of his last eight overall starts and five of his last six road starts. The Rangers, on the other hand, are just 5-11 in Perez’ last 16 starts and 0-5 in his last five starts against AL East opponents. Look for Stroman to lead his team to another win.
