Today’s pitching matchup has Trevor Bauer (4-4, 6.65 ERA) on the mound for the Indians to face Lisalverto Bonilla (0-2, 6.38) of the Reds. Bonilla is making his third start. He has pitched 18.1 innings this season, allowing 13 earned runs with eight walks and 14 strikeouts. His WHIP is 1.36. Bauer has struggled this season, allowing at least three earned runs in his last five starts. He has 53 strikeouts this season, but also has a WHIP of 1.46.
These two split the first two games of the series in Cincinnati. The Reds picked up a 5-1 win on Monday, with the Indians getting an 8-7 win last night. Cleveland is 24-20 overall and 8-10 at home this season while Cincinnati is 21-24 overall and 7-11 on the road.
In last night’s game, the Indians put up five runs in the third and took control. They then held off a rallying Reds team from there. Edwin Encarnacion had a pair of home runs in the win, giving him nine for the season. He also drove in three runs. Francisco Lindor added a home run of his own, his 10th of the season. Eugenio Suarez also hit his 10th home run of 2017, in a pinch-hit effort for the Reds.
Cleveland is back home, and while their record at home isn’t great, they should be comfortable there against their interleague rival. The Reds have struggled on the road and are sending an unproven pitcher to the mound. Bauer certainly hasn’t been good, but the Cleveland bullpen is still one of the best in baseball. As long as he can keep his team in the game, they should be able to hold on for the win.
