Today’s pitching matchup has Corey Kluber (2-1, 4.28 ERA) taking the mound for the Indians to face Mike Fiers (0-1, 5.40) of the Astros. Kluber had a slow start to the season, but is coming off a complete-game shutout against the White Sox in his last start. He has 27 strikeouts over 27 innings of work this season. Fiers has yet to get past six innings in any of his three starts this season and he has given up six home runs over 15 innings of work.
The Astros are now 14-7 overall and 7-3 on the road following Wednesday’s loss. Houston fell behind early and never got the lead in the game. Lance McCullers Jr. lasted just five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Brian McCann, Evan Gattis and Marwin Gonzalez each drove in two runs in the losing effort.
Cleveland snapped a two-game losing streak in Wednesday’s win to move to 11-9 on the season and 3-5 at home. A 3-run first inning carried the team early and allowed Trevor Bauer to pick up the win despite a lackluster outing. Bauer allowed four runs on six hits over six innings, but did have eight strikeouts. Michael Brantley drove in three runs in the win, giving him 15 RBI for the season. Carlos Santana added two hits and two RBI.
Kluber looked like the pitcher we know him to be in his last outing and it should carry over to a degree today. Houston isn’t a powerful lineup, so Kluber should be able to overpower these hitters. Even if Kluber isn’t his best, the team is still 3-1 with him on the mound in 2017. Fiers isn’t going to offer much resistance to the Cleveland hitters, who could jump out quickly again today.
