Today’s pitching matchup has Danny Salazar (2-3, 4.28 ERA) on the mound to face Francisco Liriano (2-2, 4.44) of the Jays. Salazar hasn’t been tremendous this season, as he has failed to get past six innings on the mound. He has a WHIP of 1.49, but does have 49 strikeouts in 33.2 innings of work. Liriano has also struggled to get deep into games. He has 20 walks in 26.1 innings of work. His WHIP is a high 1.75.
These two have split the first two games in the series, with Toronto getting a 4-2 win on Monday and Cleveland picking up a 6-0 win on Tuesday. The Indians are now 18-14 overall and 12-8 on the road while Toronto is 12-21 overall and 5-9 at home.
Cleveland got a 7-inning, scoreless outing from Carlos Carrasco on Tuesday night. Carrasco struck out seven and allowed just three hits in the win. Yan Gomes had two hits and drove in three runs. He had his second home run of the season. Mike Bolsinger allowed two runs and three hits, but lasted just 5.2 innings for the Jays. Aaron Loup gave up three runs in his one inning of relief.
I keep waiting for Toronto to figure things out and get hot, but it doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. While the pitching matchup isn’t great for Cleveland, I do think Salazar will be able to record a lot of strikeouts on this Toronto lineup. The Indians’ bullpen can then lock things down. Cleveland actually has been better on the road than at home, so I look for them to find a way to win again today.
