The pitching matchup today has German Marquez (10-5, 4.24 ERA) on the mound for the Rockies to face Jake Junis (5-2, 4.99) of the Royals. Marquez has struggled in recent starts, allowing nine runs over his last 10.0 innings of work. He has 113 strikeouts with 38 walks and a 1.30 WHIP this season. Junis gave up four runs in 2.1 innings in his last outing against the Indians. This season, Junis has 42 strikeouts with 17 walks and a 1.36 WHIP.
Kansas City has picked up wins in the first two games of this series, winning 3-2 on Tuesday and 6-4 on Wednesday. Kansas City is now 64-61 on the season and 35-29 at home while Colorado is 68-58 overall and 30-33 on the road.
The Royals rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to get past the Rockies on Wednesday night. Greg Holland blew his fourth save of the season by giving up the three runs in the ninth. Kansas City got the win thanks to a three-run home run from Eric Hosmer, his 21st of the season. Hosmer finished the game with three hits and four RBI to lead the Royals. Antonio Senzatela pitched five innings for Colorado and allowed just two runs, but didn’t factor into the decision. At the plate, Colorado was led by Nolan Arenado, who had a solo home run, his 29th of the season. DJ LeMahieu and Charlie Blackmon each had three hits as well.
The Royals have managed to sneak out wins in the first two games of this series but I think the momentum will eventually shift today. Neither pitcher has done well on the mound this season, but I give Marquez. He has a 3.95 ERA on the road this season while Junis really doesn’t have impressive home numbers. Colorado’s lineup is due to break out at the plate. They are far too talented to get silenced by average KC pitching again.
