The pitching matchup of tonight’s game has Ian Kennedy (1-6, 4.95 ERA) pitching for KC to face Daniel Norris (4-5, 4.66) of the Tigers. Kennedy has limited the damage in recent starts, giving up just three runs over his last 10.2 innings. He has 57 strikeouts this season with 32 walks and a 1.22 WHIP. Norris has allowed multiple runs in five straight starts, including five against the Mariners last week. He has 74 strikeouts with 34 walks this season and a 1.58 WHIP.
Detroit took the series opener on Tuesday, 5-3. The Tigers have won three of four meetings with the Royals this season. Detroit is now 34-42 overall and 19-16 at home. Kansas City is 37-38 overall and 16-20 on the road.
The Tigers fell behind 3-0 to start Tuesday’s game but eventually rallied to get a 5-3 lead and not look back. Despite allowing the three runs, Justin Verlander still battled to get through seven innings and earn his fifth win of the season. The Tigers’ bullpen actually did well, holding KC scoreless over two innings. Matt Strahm lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed all five runs. J.D. Martinez had a triple and a home run to lead Detroit while Miguel Cabrera also homered and had three RBI.
The Tigers have won two straight and are hoping to establish some momentum at home. The hitting has been somewhat hot-and-cold, but I think they should be able to get to Kennedy today. Kennedy hasn’t been able to sustain long scoreless outings. Norris hasn’t been great either, but I think he will be competitive at home. Hopefully his bullpen can back him up.
