The pitching matchup for today’s game has Mike Fiers (1-2, 5.21 ERA) on the mound for Houston to face Jose Berrios (3-0, 1.66) of the Twins. Berrios has won all three games he has started. He has gone 21.2 innings and allowed just 4 earned runs with eight hits and four walks. His WHIP is an impressive 0.55. Fiers has struggled throughout the season, allowing multiple runs in all but two starts. He has given up 27 earned runs in 46.2 innings of work. He also has 38 strikeouts with 17 walks and a WHIP of 1.52.
Houston grabbed a 16-8 win in Monday’s series opener. The Astros have won four straight and six of seven against the Twins, dating back to 2016. Houston is now 36-16 overall and 16-6 on the road while Minnesota is 26-21 overall and 12-16 at home.
Minnesota actually held an 8-2 lead in Monday’s game entering the eighth inning, but Houston went off for 11 runs in the top of the eighth. The bullpen blew up for Minnesota. Ervin Santana pitched seven and gave up just one earned run. Minnesota’s ben then gave up 14 earned runs in two innings. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Marwin Gonzalez each had three hits while Carlos Beltran had four for Houston. Beltran and Correa each drove in three runs.
Minnesota had Houston beat until the bullpen fell apart. I think things won’t be the same today. Berrios should be able to do something similar to what Santana did, but the bullpen won’t fall apart tonight. Fiers has struggled all season, so Minnesota should be able to put up some runs once again. Look for Berrios to lead the Twins to the win thanks to some early run support.
