The pitching matchup tonight has Adalberto Mejia (4-4, 4.10 ERA) on the mound for the Twins to face Chris Smith (0-1, 3.32) of the Athletics. Mejia hasn’t gotten deep into most starts, but allows limited damage. He has 63 strikeouts this season with 34 walks and a 1.45 WHIP. Smith has started three games this year, racking up 19 innings. He has allowed seven earned runs with 10 strikeouts and six walks, as well as 15 hits.
The Twins opened the series on Friday with a 6-3 win. Minnesota improved to 50-51 overall and 27-20 on the road with the victory while Oakland fell to 44-59 overall and 28-24 at home.
The Twins jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Friday and carried that to the win. They ran Daniel Gossett after just 3.2 innings, handing him his sixth loss of the season. Jaime Garcia had a good debut with the Twins, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings to get the win. Jason Castro had two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Twins at the plate. Ryan Lavarnway drove in two runs to lead the Athletics.
The Twins looked good on Friday night and continued to be a strong road team. Oakland struggled at the plate after returning home from an East-Coast road trip. Mejia doesn’t have the best overall numbers, but has been improving on his starts and could continue to give Oakland issues at the plate. Smith has given Oakland all it could ask for right now, but I don’t know that I trust these starts to continue as he provides more film for hitters. The Twins have had a knack for winning on the road and if they are going to really contend for a playoff spot, they have to win these games.
