The pitching matchup today has Buck Farmer taking the mound for the Tigers to face Mike Pelfrey (1-4, 4.85) of the White Sox. Pelfrey was a Tiger last year, but struggled to a 4-10 record and 5.07 ERA. He is actually coming off his best outing, where he allowed just one earned run in six innings of work with four hits and no walks. Buck Farmer is making his first start of the year. He has eight starts with the Tigers over his three years with the team. His career ERA is 6.84 and his WHIP is 1.67.
The Tigers are coming off losing three of four games to the Astros in Houston. Detroit is 22-24 overall and 10-14 on the road. The Tigers are putting up 4.78 runs per game, but allowing 5.04. Detroit is led by J.D. Martinez, who has seven home runs and 13 RBI in just 12 games this season. Alex Avila is adding five homers and 19 RBI while hitting .354 at the plate.
Chicago is coming off a long road trip out West and they lost three straight to the Diamondbacks in Arizona. The Sox are now 20-25 overall and 8-8 at home. Chicago is averaging 4.53 runs per game and allowing 4.20. The Sox are led by former Tiger Avisail Garcia, who is hitting .333 with eight home runs and 34 RBI. Jose Abreu is adding 10 home runs and 27 RBI.
The White Sox will enjoy being back on their home turf after a West Coast road trip that lasted over a week. They also get to come back and face a first-time starter in Farmer. Detroit can’t feel good with Farmer on the mound, as he isn’t going to be able to eat a lot of innings. That will turn the ball to the bullpen, which has struggled all year. Pelfrey hasn’t been great for Chicago, but is coming off a solid outing and may be able to build off that against Detroit.
