Wainwright took the loss in his season opener but only allowed two runs on three hits while walking two across five innings during a 2-1 loss to the Cubs on Tuesday. He struck out six batters, which was encouraging considering his down 2016 season and his suspect spring performance. The Cardinals offense just couldn’t generate anything against Chicago’s Jake Arrieta.
Roark picked up the win in Wednesday’s 6-4 victory over the Marlins. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings. Roark actually struggled early, walking two batters and giving up both his runs in the first innings while hitting two batters in the second, but he settled in and turned in a quality start.
