Reds continue to harm Cards’ playoff chances
After another flop at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals need a flamethrowing 22-year-old to keep them afloat in the National League wild-card race.
Alex Reyes will try to muzzle the Reds tonight, with a 7:15 p.m. ET first pitch in the Gateway City. Online sports book Bovada.lv gives the hosts odds of -200 to prevail, whereas Bryan Price’s bunch represents a +170 underdog. The over/under run total holds steady at eight.

St. Louis comes off a 2-1 loss on Wednesday, as it simply could not solve righty Anthony DeSclafani. The team’s just 9-9 vs. the last-place Reds this season. Worse still, Mike Matheny’s troops squandered a terrific opportunity to make up ground on the Giants. (San Francisco dropped a 2-0 verdict to Colorado.)
Now, a rookie must prevent the Cards from slipping even further behind the playoff wannabes. Reyes has already faced Cincy twice since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 9. Most recently, he powered through five taxing innings to net a 10-4 victory over the Cubs.
As for the visiting crew, Dan Straily looks to keep adding chapters to a career season. The righty owns a 4-1 record with a 2.87 ERA in his past five assignments. He’ll encounter the Redbirds for the third time in 2016.
While the Reds are missing Brandon Phillips (left hand) and Scott Schebler (hamstring), they continue to play hard for Price. Given Reyes’ stressful outing mere days ago, too, we’re a little hesitant to saddle the kid with enormous expectations here. Expect offense aplenty on both sides.
