The pitching matchup for tonight’s game has Jose Berrios (12-7, 4.01 ERA) on the mound to face Jake Junis (7-2, 4.48) of the Royals. Junis has not gotten through six innings in his last three starts. He has posted 60 strikeouts and 18 walks this season with a 1.30 WHIP. Berrios is coming off a shaky start, allowing five runs to the Rays in five innings. He has been alternating good starts with bad lately and has 122 strikeouts this season with 36 walks and a 1.15 WHIP.
The Twins have taken the first two games in this weekend series, winning 4-2 on Thursday and 8-5 on Friday. Minnesota now sits at 74-67 overall and 39-30 on the road while the Royals are 69-71 overall and 36-34 at home.
On Friday, Ian Kennedy lasted just three innings for KC, giving up three runs to fall to 4-11 on the year. Ervin Santana wasn’t great either, but got his 15th win despite giving up four runs in five innings. Eddie Rosario drove in four runs to lead the Twins while Eduardo Escobar had three hits and scored three runs. Eric Hosmer had his 24th home run of the season to lead the Royals at the plate.
Berrios hasn’t been consistent, but he has been able to bounce back. After his last two starts where giving up at least five runs, he has followed that up with a 7-inning, scoreless effort. I expect him to bounce back well again tonight against this poor Kansas City batting order. Even if he is to struggle, Junis isn’t likely to shut down Minnesota’s hitters. Junis hasn’t been getting deep into games while giving up his fair share of runs.
