Today’s pitching matchup has Dallas Keuchel (11-3, 2.91 ERA) on the mound for Houston to face Erasmo Ramirez (5-5, 4.43). Keuchel is coming off a poor outing where he allowed six runs over six innings. It was the fifth time in seven starts that he has allowed at least three runs. Keuchel has 97 strikeouts this season with 35 walks and a 1.08 WHIP. Ramirez has pitched six innings in each of his last four starts, allowing a total of six earned runs over those four starts. He has 80 strikeouts this season with 24 walks and a 1.17 WHIP.
Houston comes into today winners of four straight. The Astros have clearly signaled they are going for the World Series by trading for Justin Verlander this week. Houston is 83-53 overall and 42-22 on the road. The Astros are averaging 5.58 runs per game this season while allowing 4.39 per contest. Jose Altuve has been leading the team with 36 doubles, 21 home runs, 72 RBI and 31 stolen bases while hitting .357. The team recently got Carlos Correa back. Correa has 20 home runs and 68 RBI in 85 games.
Seattle is coming into this series after sweeping the Athletics at home this weekend. Seattle is now 69-68 overall and 37-32 at home. The Mariners are putting up 4.67 runs per game this year while giving up 4.81 per contest. Seattle is being led by Nelson Cruz, who has 25 doubles, 31 home runs and 104 RBI. Robinson Cano has added 28 doubles, 21 home runs and 84 RBI.
Both teams come out hot but the Astros should have some more bounce in their step right now. They acquired Verlander and finally got Correa back. Houston is now at its strongest point. If Keuchel can get back to his early season form, the Astros may very well be able to make a run at the World Series. Keuchel has been shaky lately and could struggle tonight, but Houston is going to win more often than not. I can’t see them being in a big funk given their current roster makeup.
