From Rotoworld: Samardzija allowed four earned runs, nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts across seven innings in a loss Saturday against the Marlins. After a rocky 0-5 start to the season, he has allowed three or fewer runs in nine of his past 11 outings and he has lasted at least six innings in each of his past seven appearances. Samardzija has a respectable 1.15 WHIP, thanks mostly due to his low walk rate. He has issued just three free passes over his past 79 2/3 innings. Still, he heads into the All-Star break with a dismal 4-10 record and 4.58 ERA record across 118 innings.
Cahill was touched up for six hits and four runs over five innings Sunday in the Padres’ loss to Philadelphia. Cahill registered eight strikeouts without walking a batter. The right-hander had trouble keeping the ball in the yard, serving up homers to Nick Williams, Cameron Rupp and Freddy Galvis. Cahill didn’t have his best stuff against the Phils but he’s been surprisingly useful this year, limiting opponents to an ugly .226 average while posting an elite 11.19 K/9 over nine starts for the Padres.
