Latest on Velasquez via Rotoworld: Velasquez fanned seven while allowing one run over five innings Thursday against the Rockies. Hopefully, this was a step forward, though the Rockies lineup is the game’s most overrated right now (subtract Coors from the equation and it’s the pitching that’s carried the team this year). Volquez threw 70 of 94 pitches for strikes, which is exactly what he needs to do to keep improving an ERA that stood at 5.98 coming into this one. It’d have been nice if he could have pitched a little deeper into the game, but the Phillies pen picked him up with six scoreless innings afterwards.
Nicolino yielded five runs in four innings Friday in a loss to the Dodgers. Nicolino gets so few strikeouts that he just can’t afford to give up homers with any frequency. He surrendered two tonight, bringing his career total to 18 in 163 1/3 innings pitched. That’s not awful in this day and age, but it’s not good enough to make him a quality starter.
Bet Tonight’s Phillies vs. Marlins Game
OUR PREDICTION: The Marlins have dropped nine of Nicolino’s last 13 starts, are 1-5 in his last six home outings, and are winless at 0-4 in his last four starts when their opponent scored two runs or less in its previous game. The Marlins are also just 9-22 in their last 31 games overall, are 4-11 in their last 15 games at home, and 1-8 in their last nine games following a win.
