The pitching matchup tonight has Kevin Gausman (10-9, 4.98 ERA) on the mound for the Orioles to face Joe Biagini (3-9, 5.40) of the Blue Jays. Gausman is coming off a 7.2-inning, scoreless outing against the Red Sox. He has 140 strikeouts this season with 63 walks and a 1.59 WHIP. Biagini has been in relief in most of his recent outings, but he has given up eight runs over his last 4.1 innings of work. He has 77 strikeouts this season with 32 walks and a 1.40 WHIP.
These two opened their weekend series on Thursday night, with Toronto picking up an 11-8 victory on the road. The road team has actually won four of the last five meetings between these two. The Blue Jays are now 62-72 overall and 27-38 on the road while Baltimore is 68-66 overall and 41-27 at home.
Both starting pitchers struggled on Thursday. Jeremy Hellickson gave up seven runs over 4.2 innings to take his third loss. Marco Estrada got the win despite allowing six runs over five innings. Kendrys Morales had three home runs for the Jays, driving in seven runs. He now has 25 home runs this season. Adam Jones hit his 26th home run for the Orioles and drove in a pair of runs.
The Orioles continued to hit the ball well on Thursday, they just didn’t get the pitching they needed to win. Toronto is without some key hitters tonight and I don’t see Morales hitting another three home runs. Gausman is coming off a great start against Boston and can build on that tonight against a depleted Toronto roster. Look for the Orioles to continue mashing the ball and pick up the win.
